Move to Kaneshie!

Dec. 1, 2014

This week was sweet! I am comfortable in my new area now, enjoying my new companion, Elder Kiwanuka from Uganda. He is a wonderful, hard working missionary. The new area is very much city- albeit the worst part is the open gutter system thus making the place smell like sewage... other than that it is a great place! I cant say the area is as fruitful as past areas, although we are able to sit down with more people here because everyone lives close together. We meet more people each day, that sure is a bonus. I am enjoying the new experience of serving in a city.

I had one of those moments this week that made me want to curl up and die of embarrassment. Tuesday, Elder Okwu and I made plans to have a FHE with our part member family i mentioned last week. We wanted to do something nice for the family so we decided we would make a special treat of Yam Fufu, rather than cassava fufu. It is more of a nigerian dish that Elder Okwu is familiar with. We brought all the food materials and were excited to have fun with the younger kids preparing food with them and then having a nice lesson and playing some games. thats what we imagined anyways...

The first problem started when we got very behind schedule and showed up to their house around 4 pm rather than 2 like we had planned. No big deal, we still planned to eat by 6 so it wasnt a huge problem... to boil the yam and make the soup should only take an hour, then another hour to pound the yam and make fufu. sweet! yeah, well, thats not what happened. I guess sister C wasnt too familiar with pounding yam so for some reason, it took THREE HOURS of pounding yam before it was all prepared. THREE HOURS of beating yam with a stick! everyone was hungry, tired and weak from a long days work. It was dark, no electricity, and here we were pounding fufu with blisters on our hands and about to pass out from exhaustion. The youngest children started to cry because they were hungry and it was 8:00 pm and they hadnt eaten... we were feeling pretty horrible... then, if that wasnt enough, one of the kids knocked over the soup to eat the fufu with! gah!! i wanted to die!!! now we had nothing to eat this fufu we had spent 3 hours pounding with. it laid on the dirt. ah, it was awful. It was a miracle that no one started fighting!

thankfully, enough of the soup was managed that we were able to eat in darkness, silence and with just enough food to calm our tired hungry bodies... a great way to say goodbye!

anyways, my time is up, gotta run. Thanks for the prayers on my behalf! love you all!
